Bullying is becoming more and more of a prevalent issue in society today. There are many kids and young adults who are suffering so badly at the hands (and words) of others, they often turn to drastic measures to help cope, including self mutilation and suicide.

While bullying has been going on since the beginning of time, pop stars like Lady Gagaand Demi Lovato have made it their mission to stop it once and for all — and not just because they feel bad for the victims, but because they themselves were at the receiving end of harsh comments and actions.
With the new documentary ‘Bully’ hitting theaters this weekend, it’s an appropriate time to hear firsthand accounts of bullying from celebrities like Gaga, EminemSelena GomezMadonnaTaylor Swift and more

Lady Gaga

“The boys picked me up and threw me in the trash can on the street, on the corner of my block while all the other girls from the school were leaving and could see me in the trash… Everybody was laughing and I was even laughing. I had that nervous giggle… I remember even one of the girls looking at me like, ‘Are you about to cry? You’re pathetic.’ That’s what it felt like, you’re pathetic.”
“It didn’t sink in with me how bullying affected me until later in my life. I knew that it affected me deeply but it wasn’t until a little bit later that I realized how much it affected me and how much it was still very present… I think it took me to get to know my fans and to see similar struggles in them to access that wound in myself.” – Lady Gaga

Demi Lovato

“I literally didn’t know why they were being so mean to me… And when I would ask them why, they would just say, ‘Well, you’re fat.’ I was bullied because I was fat. And then a few months later I developed an eating disorder, and that’s kind of what I’ve been dealing with ever since.”
“I asked to leave public school… I had a hate wall in the bathroom, and everyone signed a petition that said ‘We all hate Demi Lovato.’” – Demi Lovato

Jessie J

“[It] was totally malicious and ugly. Children threw stones at my head… It might be kinda funny now but it was horrific at the time… Kids at school nicknamed me Alien [and] Bugs Bunny because of my teeth.”
“But you know what? Suffering bullying means that you are special and that’s what I want all children to know. My song ‘Who’s Laughing Now’ was important to me and I heard people saying that music helped to talk about bullying and get help. I kept every letter I have received since the beginning of my career and made a book so I can read them in 10 years time.” – Jessie J

Chris Colfer

“I personally was never physically bullied or tossed into dumpsters, but I definitely was verbally and socially bullied.”
“It definitely taught me to be quick on my feet with witty comebacks… I remember one time someone screamed ‘fag’ at me in the hallway, and I screamed back, ‘Yeah, but can you spell it?’ Everyone in the hallway laughed at the other kid; it was nice to reverse the abuse.”
“The emotions that [my 'Glee' character Kurt Hummel] goes through are very real. I’ve personally gone through all of those.” – Chris Colfer

“Junior high was actually sort of hard because I got dumped by this group of popular girls. They didn’t think I was cool or pretty enough, so they stopped talking to me…. The kids at school [also] thought it was weird that I liked country [music]. They’d make fun of me.”
“There are two ways you can [deal] with it if you are bullied. You can let it destroy you, or you can use it as fuel to drive you: to dream bigger, work harder. I wasn’t invited to parties and I look back now and I’m so thankful that I was at home playing guitar until my fingers bled.” – Taylor Swift

“I was a little confused as a kid because I grew up with my mom, and my mom is black. So I was cultured in a very ‘black’ way. But when I go to school, I’m getting called ‘white.’”
“They would look at me and would curse me out. I didn’t understand. I just knew I saw people of all different shades and I was light. Now I’m in a much bigger world.” – Rihanna

Rebecca Black

“When I walk by they’ll start singing ‘Friday‘ in a really nasally voice. Or, you know, they’ll be like, ‘Oh hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?’
“I’ve had a lot of experience with not being liked and all that. I think if I hadn’t had to deal with that in the past then I totally would have handled this differently and I would have gone down in burning flames. But I’ve learned that you just can’t let it get to you.”
“For anyone who’s been bullied or is being bullied right now, I’ve been there, and I know how they feel. It really sucks being bullied … One thing you can’t do is let them stop you from doing what you wanna do.” – Rebecca Black

Selena Gomez

“I was never the popular kid at school. I had two friends, but I just sat at the back of the room and got on with my work.”
“School is such an awkward time in your life. I was never confident in school… I was definitely made fun of for being in the [entertainment] industry.” – Selena Gomez

Eminem

“I would change schools two, three times a year. That was probably the roughest part about it all…. [I got] beat up in the bathroom, beat up in the hallways, shoved into lockers. You know, just…for the most part, man, you know, just bein’ the new kid.”
“I felt like I was being attacked, I was being singled out. And I felt like, is it because of the color of my skin? … There was certainly like a rebellious, like, youthful rage in me. And there was also… no getting away from [the] fact that I am white and you know this is predominantly black music. And people telling me ‘You don’t belong, like you’re not going to succeed because you are this color.’ Then you wanna show those people that you can and you will.” – Eminem

Madonna

“The boys in my school would make fun of me. [They would call me] ‘hairy monster.’ You know, things like that. And then, going to high school, I saw how popular girls had to behave to get the boys. I knew I couldn’t fit into that. So I decided I would do the opposite. I refused to wear makeup, [or] to have a hairstyle. I refused to shave. I had hairy armpits.”
“It wasn’t until my ballet teacher, who was gay, took me under his wing and introduced me to a community of artists of other unique individuals who told me it was good and okay to be different.”
“I think it would be interesting for everybody to try to get through the day… without gossiping about somebody… Not even listening to gossip… Can you imagine what your day would be like?” – Madonna
